Cyber squatters are opening ‘spoof’ travel sites mimicking real ones

It should come as no surprise that the online travel market has become the buzzword among cyber squatters. Cyber squatters have developed phantom travel sites (similar to genuine ones) to reap benefit out of this $2 billion worth segment. Cyber squatters are developing sites that are similar to generic sites (like indiatimestravel.com for travel.indiatimes.com and mytripyatra.com for makemytrip.com and yatra.com) in order to bluff the users. They further charge an exorbitant price and also provide sub-standard packages.

The story of clones, one guesses, has just started. A spoof site, ‘webcameron.info’ was developed within two days of the launch of ‘Webcameron.org.uk’, that featured the speeches and vision statements of United Kingdom’s Conservative leaders. Even Liberal Democrat MP Mark Oaten was a victim of cyber squatting as his rival hacked his site ‘markoaten.co.uk’ and directed users to his own site, thus stealing potential voters.....continue

Murthy’s call of strength

Here’s some more ‘soft’ power to India, yet again! At an Infosys global internship programme in Bangalore recently, Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys, said that China was way behind India in the software sector, and that India should work hard to leverage this lead to get ahead in the global market. Although China has done wonders with its manufacturing sector, “India has had a lead of 20 years over China,” he added. He had other very encouraging points to say about India’s stranglehold in the software sector: including the fact that India attracted “middle class professionals”, who are smart, who work hard and who understand customers and operations better; how quality matters for most Indian companies; and how India has a fairly advanced system. But Murthy put out a big word of caution too. He said that India should never make the mistake of underestimating China which is an “extraordinary nation and if it decides to put its soul into something it does it well.” He went on to point out the strengths of China: like, for instance, the country’s excellent education system, and its two trillion plus dollar economy with $950 billion worth of exports.

Which is the sexiest profession in the world?

Another aspect of lifeguard life is the need to constantly train and be in prime physical condition. That is where lifeguard competitions come in. Originally started as a means for various lifeguards to match their skills against the best in the business, over the years these events have grown in relevance and meaning. A crucial component of life-guarding is the ability to work together, to co-ordinate, to rely on the other person to do their job, and the competitions help to do just that. The latest competition on the horizon is the USLA (United States Lifesaving Association) Lifeguard Championship, to be held in August, in South Carolina. Events include Rescue board race, Ironman/ woman, Surf swim, etc. All designed to build endurance, teamwork and impart crucial realtime training. Guess even the world’s sexiest profession needs a lot of hard work.

SEZs: At the cost of ‘what not’?!

Genocide and many rendered landless – that defines SEZs in West Bengal! “If you do an honest economic analysis of land classified as an SEZ vis-á-vis land used for agriculture, SEZs certainly give better returns and opportunities. But using social indicators and politics of the day, it is difficult to say what will be the outcome. However, if the SEZs are granted to private parties, then everything should be done on commercial basis...” explains Mohammed Saqib, Senior Fellow, Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

However, this sequestered unrest has not deterred the Board of Approval (BoA), as it recently awarded conditional approval to Mukesh Ambani-promoted Navi Mumbai SEZ and 20 others. Thus, the total number of approved SEZs in the country stands at 360. The BoA also, of late, gave its approval to Hindalco in Orissa, the first North-East SEZ in Nagaland and to Parsvnath in Haryana. “All the states are competing to get SEZs in their place. Each wants to leave the other one behind,” comments Amir Ullah Khan, Senior Fellow, Indian Development Foundation.

The government has revealed that from 2006-07 to 2009-10, it has accrued loss of revenues of around Rs.1.03 trillion due to fiscal sops to SEZs. The government is believed to be thinking along the OECD lines, that suggests removal of sops. The other biggest challenge is the social acceptability and justification of SEZs, while keeping politics out of it. Would these measures turn SEZs into profitable zones for the government? The answer is startling as Saqib points out, “If the government stays out, all the SEZs in India will become profitable. The government should only work as a watch dog...”
